An update on the bus story

In today's BEP.The number of comments show the strength of feeling on this. And contrary to what one person says, it's not Labour's fault that Bristol doesn't have an Integrated Transport Authority. We want one, and the recent Local Transport Act made it easier for us to get one - it's the Tories and Lib Dems in surrounding areas who have blocked it.

The demise of local bus services in all but our biggest cities since the start of the Tory deregulation experiment is distressing. The hyper-inflation in fares, especially by comparison with the fall in real terms of motoring costs, is maddening.

I guess this hasn't been one of Labour's highest priorities - we inherited a huge heap of other more serious debts-by-neglect from the Conservatives - and I'm not suggesting that there are any simple solutions, but couldn't something more forceful have been done by now?

It's not easy being in government (but far better than being in opposition!)...

Well I don't understand what all the snivelling is about, an annual pass for Bristol costs from £583 to £1,124 depending on what zones you cover.

Most motorists lose that in depreciation alone. Even if you opt for a £500 banger, you'd do very well to spend less than eleven hundred quid on tax, insurance, servicing, fuel and parking in a year.

Not only are the buses in Bristol nowhere near as bad as you all make out, there is no good reason for the taxpaying car users to subsidise your bus fares.

Kerry, what is the meaning of your blog title - Shot by both sides?

The meaning? It's kind of a wry reflection on the fact that you can't please anyone on here, and will come under attack from the left and right. And also it's one of my favourite songs, with probably the best riff ever. One day I will fix it so that the blog plays it.

I love busses. Won't ever sit upstairs though - even though they rarely fall over, why take the risk? Apparently where I live i'm supposed to care about an interchange, whatever that is.

It should read "Shot By All Sides". Most of the readers of this blog seem to hate our Kerry, you see...
